How it works
The same input gives the same digest; a tiny change gives a completely different result.
SHA-256 maps input of any length to a fixed 256-bit digest. Common uses include file checks, content addressing, and the digest stage of signatures.
Plain SHA-256 is unsuitable for password storage because it is fast and unsalted. Use Argon2, scrypt, bcrypt, or PBKDF2 instead.
SHA-256 output: 256 bits = 32 bytes = 64 hexadecimal characters.

Can SHA-256 be decrypted?
No. A hash is one-way; you can only test whether a candidate input produces the same digest.
Why can the same-looking text give a different result?
Case, spaces, line breaks, and encoding change the input bytes and therefore the digest.
Is SHA-1 still safe?
Collision attacks exist against SHA-1. Do not use it for signatures or secure integrity; it is provided only for legacy checks.
